Baseball

The Houston Astros have completed their third season at the amazing Minute Maid Park. The four-time National League Central Division Champions are lead by pitchers such as Wade Miller and Roy Oswalt and batters such as Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman, the Astros are an exciting team to watch. Basketball

The Houston Rockets look to the proven talents of Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley for both offensive and defensive impact. Francis ranked third in the NBA for triple-doubles in the 2001-2002 season. Cuttino “The Cat” Mobley tied his career-high 41 points last season against New Jersey. This year, the Rockets added first-round draft pick Yao Ming to the team. The four-time WNBA Champion Houston Comets play their seventh season in the summer of 2003. Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes earned both 2000 and 2002 MVP honors from the WNBA. Tina Thompson, another Comets forward, is consistently among the WNBA’s top players. Thompson is the second WNBA player to post 1,000 rebounds in her career, which spans the league’s six-year history. The new downtown sports arena is scheduled to open in fall 2003. The Rockets expect to kick off the 2003-2004 season at the new arena. The facility will also be the new home of the Comets and Aero.

 

Hockey

The Houston Aeros are in the midst of its second season with the American Hockey League, after participating in the International Hockey League from 1994-2001. The AHL affiliation gives the Aeros the opportunity to be a farm team for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. The Aeros now play an 80-game schedule from October through March, with 40 games at home in the new downtown sports arena and 40 games on the road in the AHL’s Western Conference. Football

NFL fans witnessed the fall 2002 debut of the Houston Texans, whose home field is the amazing Reliant Stadium, a 69,000-seat retractable roof football stadium. Rookie David Carr proved he definitely belongs in the NFL and shows great promise as the Texans’ quarterback. The entire team, made up of impressive draft picks and seasoned veterans, easily won the hearts of Houston football fans.
